YOUTH ADVOCATES
STYC is committed to implementing
youth-led prevention strategies.
​
Youth Advocates develop advocacy skills by promoting healthy neighborhoods through retail compliance checks and built environment assessments. They develop their leadership skills by encouraging their peers to engage in healthy behaviors through alternative activities and goal setting workshops.

ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

Creating PSAs and social media campaigns that promote positive messages to other young people e.g. most youth choose to stay drug and alcohol-free

Participating in the national Red Ribbon week. A week long event that provides education and activities that surround drug prevention.

Working with local organizations on the Drug Enforcement Agency’s National Drug Take-Back Day, which allows people to safely dispose of prescription medications.

Volunteering and modeling "good choices" at community events

Assisting local Alcohol and Beverage Control and the health department in assuring retailers are following the laws and regulations that are set to prevent underage drinking.

Coordinating educational workshops about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs while promoting prevention and a drug-free lifestyle

Collaborating with other local substance abuse prevention groups and organizations to advocate for healthy youth lifestyles

Facilitating Town Hall Meeting to keep the community abreast of new information surrounding underage substance use.

Planning alternative activities for middle and high school students.
More About STYC

We believe that it is our obligation to the Shawnee community and other parts of Louisville to help foster, guide and develop future generations for success. The youth who choose to become STYC Advocates recognize the impact of substance use and see the benefits of what our program offers. Our board and staff come from diverse business and civic backgrounds, who are familiar with the needs and challenges of our community.
